Seeing life's events in the light of God's Word.

December Twenty-sixth

Psalm 118:24 – “This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.”

“Real” trees have been dropped off at designated locations; artificial ones are stored away in garages; yard decorations have been taken down for another year.

Tinsel and precious ornaments are nestled in protective papers; garland is put away in specially-labeled boxes; wreaths and outdoor lights are kept on high shelves until next winter.

Christmas is now past.

In fact, the day after Christmas I was in our local drugstore where employees were already working on Valentine’s Day displays!

Really?

When the store manager overheard the comment I made to my husband, he interrupted our conversation. “That’s the way it is, folks. Nowadays all people do is live from one holiday to the next. Retailers never miss a beat. We just keep the season’s merchandise on the shelves.”

How sad, I thought later. Always looking ahead to the next celebration, never content with today.

I opened my Bible to a familiar verse. I’d read it—even quoted it—numerous times.

Now, it took on new meaning as I thanked God for December 26th. A “plain day” with no special label that I was aware of— another day the Lord made.

A day to make memories with family, serve in my community, even do house work. A day with endless possibilities.

Another day to rejoice and be glad!

Oh, Joyous Fall!

Acts 14:17- “Yet he has not left himself without testimony: He has shown kindness by giving you rain from heaven and crops in their seasons; he provides you with plenty of food and fills your hearts with joy.

Fall is my favorite season.

The smell of autumn leaves, bonfires, s’mores, warm cider, pumpkins and spices…

The other seasons each have their own distinctive scents, special foods, and ways of celebration, too.

God cares for us intimately, giving us each new day as a gift from Him. And, as the Great Provider, He gives us rain, crops, foods to sustain us.

But, read today’s verse, again. He also gives us these things in order to fill our hearts with joy.

God cares about us in the midst of life’s storms and, in the fullness of time, brings us back to the mountaintops where He showers us with blessings and indescribable joy.
