Seeing life's events in the light of God's Word.

Luke 6:42-  “How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.”

My son ran to my side, hiding behind my full skirt. “Mom, she pinched me!”

“Well, he started it.” My daughter retorted, hands on her hips.

I sighed. Would this bickering back and forth ever end?

“Can’t you two just be nice to one another for a single afternoon?”

My daughter rolled her eyes. “I’d be nicer if he would.”

“Well, I’d leave her alone if she’d stop bothering me, first.

Wouldn’t the world be a better place if everyone else would change their behavior and we could just go on behaving as we always have?

But the Bible says that we need to look within and see our own faults as they really are—and be willing to be the first one to change. When we are perfect, then we can start to work on the other guy.

God says that the way to truly change marriages, friendships, and business interactions is for us to be the catalyst for change.

It may be no fun to look within.

And, change is hard…especially when we feel it’s clearly the other person who should be making the effort.

But, the change we want will only happen when we

STOP complaining,

LOOK within and

LISTEN to God’s direction.

An Unusual Choir

Acts 16:25- “About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them.”

Recently, I heard about a group of prisoners in a maximum security prison that had formed a choir. The camaraderie among those inmates and the discovery of their hidden talents was something to behold as the story unfolded. I felt so blessed as I heard them perform.

They are hardened criminals. Many of them have tried to kill each other while in prison.

Now, they are singing together! What a transformation.

There was an earthquake as the singing was going on in the prison in Phillippi. The Bible tells us in verses 27 and 28 that even though all of the previously locked doors were suddenly opened, not one prisoner even tried to escape!

So, is it the power of music that changed both groups of criminals?

I don’t think so. I think we can accord the changes to the fact that God used both of those circumstances to bring the prisoners into better relationship with HIM and, then, with each other.

King David wrote hundreds of songs of praise to God. Christian hymnals are full of beautiful ones written by many gifted individuals throughout the ages.

Whether in the present or the future, God may use singing to lift, inspire, and change, just like He has throughout the ages.

And, we may use it as an offering of praise to HIM.

Things They Are A Changin’

Numbers 23:19a- “God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind.”

I noticed a website selling white heels and matching purses last week. Don’t they know you’re not supposed to wear white after Labor Day?

I saw a commercial for mascara that “clumps”—on purpose! It seems my search for the perfect mascara is over!!!

Profanity is not always bleeped out, nowadays!

Girls with blond hair are dying their roots black!

Teenagers—even adults—frequently wear their underwear on the outside.

People are often seen wearing their pajamas in grocery stores and shopping malls…

Things are changing. Unwritten societal “rules” are being replaced at a rapid pace.

Is there no end to the changes possible in the future?

I can say without apology, that I liked things the way they used to be. Predictable. I could count on the fact that if I knew the rule, I’d be doing the correct thing.

We can be sure of some things, though. Like the fact that God never changes.

We can count on His Word, His truths, remaining the same throughout all eternity.

In this world of uncertainty, we can have the assurance that

He will not change course…

He will not change His mind…

He will not check out…

He will not abandon us…

He will not stop loving us…
