Seeing life's events in the light of God's Word.

No Power Outages

Revelation 22:5a- “And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light.”

Robin’s heart skipped a beat. Home with their two-month-old baby as her husband traveled across country to attend a class reunion, she felt a sudden pang of helplessness when the lights flickered and went out.

We are all aware of the power outages in several states due to hurricanes, intense winds, and flooding. And our hearts go out to families who are displaced … forced to rebuild …

Darkness causes us to feel vulnerable … uneasy.

But light wards off the criminal element and we feel safer—more in control.

The Bible reminds us that there will be no power outages in Heaven. No need of lamps, night lights, or street lamps.

We will never be anxious or afraid because there is no darkness there.

Our home will be with Jesus who IS light. “And in him there is no darkness at all.”

Live Out the Truth

1 John 1: 5, 6- “This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth.

Charlie slipped from the warmth of his bed and made his way down the hallway to the family room. He closed the door, keeping the volume on the television low as he watched a late night program that was vulgar and distasteful.

The next day, he talked with friends after the church service, as if he had done nothing wrong. He had a secret life—a dark life—of which no one was aware.

Lately, Charlie had been looking at pornography, listening to dirty jokes around the water cooler at work, and had begun an inappropriate relationship with a co-worker.

The fellowship he had once had with the Lord had been completely eroded as Charlie made one decision after another to walk in darkness.

When sinful thoughts take root, sinful behavior is what grows—it is the fruit of the flesh—whereas the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

Charlie ended up losing his wife, family, friends, and job before he finally repented and was restored into a right relationship with the Lord—a fellowship of goodness, hope, and LIGHT in which he is now living out the truth of God’s Word.

Turning Darkness Into Light

Psalm 18:28- “You, Lord, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light.”

Tomorrow many of us will be witness to a solar eclipse.

This hasn’t happened since 1979, so it is a big deal. People from other countries are even traveling to the United States to be part of it all.

The total eclipse will last for as long as a couple of minutes in several places.

Total darkness.

Devoid of light.

We know it will just be a short time before the light will again be restored and we will go on about our daily routine.

Many times, the Bible uses the term darkness to refer to times in our lives that are filled with sadness.

In movies, gloomy skies are often a sign of impending doom. The villain in stories is often portrayed as sinister by describing his dark eyes.

Troubled individuals often describe their lives as “dark.”

But, the psalmist in the verse above says that Jesus is able to turn sadness in to joy and bring light into the darkest of lives. He is able to bring hope where there was none.

His word says that Jesus is light and in Him there is no darkness at all.

As you watch the eclipse, there will be a heart throbbing moment when the light once more begins to appear. It will get greater and greater until the sun—the light of day—will once more rule the heavens.

The Son of God, who spoke the divisions of darkness and light into their very existence and “called the darkness night and the light day” wants to rule in our hearts. He wants preeminence in our thoughts and lives.

Pure, blameless, perfect…light.

Jesus—The Light of the World.
